Nomura Research Institute is proud to announce that it has ranked number 8 on the World’s Most Sustainable Companies for 2024 by TIME.

Based on a comprehensive research study by Statistica, the ranking honours companies committed to providing a better environment for future generations.

The companies at the top of the list have signed on to some of the most respected climate programs, including the 1.5°C target from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and receive high scores from CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). TIME and Statista further held companies to high standards for their Scope 1 and 2 emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, emissions reductions in 2021 and 2022 (the most recent years fully reported), and proportion of renewable energy used by the company’s operations. (Scope 1 emissions are directly caused by a company; Scope 2 are indirectly created when a company purchases power.) And, perhaps most importantly, many of the top companies demonstrate how sustainability is incorporated into their business models.

The NRI Group, covering Japan, Asia, Europe, North America, and Australasia, operates with sustainability at the heart of its business, and is ambitiously working to support emissions calculations across the supply chain by linking the CO2 emissions information of numerous companies through our Carbon Tracing System (NRI-CTS).

In February 2023, the NRI Group raised the level of its Scope 1+2 emissions reduction target by FY2030 and set a new target of net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the entire NRI Group value chain by FY2050. NRI obtained certification of the SBT Initiative’s net-zero target as a target that meets the SBT Initiative’s “net-zero standard” in February 2024.

NRI is also part of the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Partnership for the Carbon Transparency project, which aims to accelerate decarbonisation by increasing transparency of emissions in the supply chain.
