Nomura Research Institute is proud to announce that it has climbed to number 6 on the World’s Most Sustainable Companies for 2025 by TIME.
The list, compiled in collaboration with Statista, is based on a structured study of over 5,000 companies and evaluates those who have made measurable progress towards cleaner energy use, workplace safety and stronger climate action. NRI’s improved ranking, up two spots from eighth place in 2024, also reflects an ongoing effort to strengthen environmental initiatives and create a more sustainable world for the next generation.
Like many of the companies at the top of this list, NRI has adopted the 1.5 °C target from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and continues to receive high scores from the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). TIME and Statista also assessed them on their Scope 1 and 2 emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, in addition to their emissions reductions for 2023 (the most recent year fully reported) and the proportion of renewable energy used by the company’s operations. The list also recognises many firms in IT and digital services, highlighting a shift towards sustainability in technology-driven business models.
The NRI Group, covering Japan, Asia, Europe, North America, and Australasia, operates with sustainability at the heart of its business, and is ambitiously working to support emissions calculations across the supply chain by linking the CO2 emissions information of numerous companies through our Carbon Tracing System (NRI-CTS).
Furthermore, we are pleased to report that, as of FY2024, the NRI Group has already reduced Scope 1+2 emissions by 91% from the FY2019 base year, which puts us firmly on track to achieve our FY2030 target of a 97% reduction. Progress on our 100% renewable energy target is equally encouraging, with the NRI Group currently sitting at 98%.
NRI also remains a part of the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Partnership for the Carbon Transparency project, which aims to accelerate decarbonisation by increasing transparency of emissions in the supply chain.
