This client is an Australian ASX Top 100 company with global operations.

They have been a strategic customer of NRI for over two decades, partnering closely on Oracle Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) support and enhancement services. Over this period, NRI has delivered ongoing services across Financial Reporting and Analytics applications within a highly customised Oracle Hyperion environment, ensuring platform stability, performance and continuous improvement.

Opportunity

The client was operating on an out-of-support version of Oracle EPM, introducing significant operational and security risks. Out-of-support software no longer receives updates, defect fixes, or critical security patches, increasing vulnerability and limiting efficiency.

In addition, the client’s Oracle Data Integration platform was also out of support. The newer integration platform was not certified with the target Oracle EPM release, creating compatibility constraints and restricting the client’s ability to modernise its financial reporting and analytics capabilities.

To maintain compliance, vendor supportability, and long-term system stability, the client required an upgrade of its Financial Reporting and Analytics platform, including Oracle EPM and associated middleware, hosted within its existing cloud environment.

Solution

NRI’s value extended beyond technical delivery to its deep understanding of the client’s operating model and highly customised Oracle EPM landscape. This insight, developed over many years of collaboration, enabled NRI to precisely tailor the upgrade to the client’s business processes and architectural standards.

The existing environment was hosted within the client’s AWS-based cloud platform. As part of the upgrade, the new Oracle EPM environment was required to remain within this platform to align with the client’s broader cloud strategy. In addition, the client required the introduction of DevOps practices to support automated infrastructure deployment and improve scalability and operational efficiency.

To meet these requirements, the NRI team rapidly upskilled in AWS DevOps and implemented automated deployment pipelines. NRI successfully delivered a greenfield, DevOps-enabled Oracle EPM Development and Production environment using a distributed architecture, incorporating faster CPUs, enhanced storage, and a fully secured HTTPS configuration.

Key challenges

        • Migration from Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) to Oracle Financial Data Quality Management (FDMEE)
Data load jobs across multiple applications were redesigned, improving performance and simplifying ongoing maintenance.
        • Error handling and data quality
Custom error-handling views enabled uninterrupted batch processing and proactive data validation.
        • Automated migration scripts
Environment-specific naming conventions and deployment complexities were resolved using automated Lifecycle Management scripts.
        • Unsupported ODI functionality
Legacy functions were replaced with custom scripts to ensure robust integration and ongoing compatibility.

Testing and data migration

All application data was migrated to the upgraded Oracle Hyperion platform, covering Hyperion Financial Management (FHM), Data Relationship Management (DRM), Planning, Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management (HPCM), and Essbase cubes. Comprehensive reconciliation processes achieved 100% data accuracy.

A dual-environment approach enabled side-by-side validation of legacy and upgraded platforms, ensuring no loss of functionality while confirming measurable performance improvements.

Performance Optimisation

        • Overnight batch processes completed up to 40% faster.
        • Some batch runs finished up to four hours earlier, improving business agility.
        • Smart View retrieval times improved by up to 50%, enhancing end-user productivity.

Outcomes

Following the upgrade, the client now operates on a fully compliant, Oracle-supported Oracle EPM environment, ensuring long-term stability, security, and vendor supportability.

Dependency on legacy integration platforms has been fully removed, with all integrations redeveloped using FDMEE. This has streamlined data integration processes and simplified any future transition to Oracle EPM Cloud, establishing a strong foundation for ongoing modernisation.

        • Significantly improved batch processing and reporting performance.
        • Reduced manual effort through streamlined data integration and DevOps automation.
        • A modern, scalable architecture aligned to future Oracle EPM Cloud readiness.

NRI continues to provide ongoing support and advisory services, helping the client drive continuous improvement and advance its cloud modernisation journey across its enterprise performance management landscape.
